Together® Questions and Answers
My child won't sit still for 45 minutes...
what if she wanders around or cries?
We don't expect any child to sit still throughout class. Although
Music Together® classes always have structure, we maintain an
informal atmosphere in the class and do not expect children of this
young age to sit still or even actively participate throughout the
whole class. Children are free to wander about the circle or around
the room during class as long as they are not hurting themselves
or others. We know that young kids learn best by self-directed exploration,
discovery and play. While some of our activities are done seated,
with a focus activity, such as a fingerplay, we do have at least
three or four music activities where we all get up and move around
the room. Additionally, there is always a "free dance/movement"
time and a "play along" or "fam jam" during
the class. Parents are free to take the activity over to their child
to engage them or try to bring them back to the "circle"
but are never pressured to do so. Children naturally express themselves
and their feelings in a variety of ways. Crying is part of every
child's range of emotion, and we do not shame or discourage it.
You, as the parent, will know whether your child is simply vocalizing
and expressing or is signaling to you that (s)he is overstimulated
and needs a cuddle break. Unless we feel that the child is very
unhappy in the room, we will not request that you leave the teaching
space. Occasionally, it can be beneficial to take a break outside
of the room and come back when your child is ready. We want the
Music Together® experience to be a positive one for you and
your child.
