What is Music Together®?
Music Together is a 22 year old, research-based program designed
to enhance children's acquisition of basic musical competence, based
on the belief that all children are musical. Additionally, children's
ability to move, communicate, and socialize may be enhanced, and
the family gains another common "language" for day-to-day
interaction. The Music Together headquarters are based in Hopewell,
New Jersey in a beautiful 'green' building. Music Together currently serves over 2,200 communities worldwide. The co-authors of the program, Ken Guilmartin and Lili Levinowitz, continue to teach children and train teachers applying the latest research in early child hood music development to the curriculum. Registered teachers and center directors
must all successfully complete a rigorous Music Together teacher training program in early childhood music development. All teachers working for FAM JAM! must also attend several classes and apprentice with Devi Borton, center director of FAM JAM, for at least one semester.
In typical Music Together classes, 6-12
children ages birth to kindergarten age and their parents or caregivers
meet for 45 minutes each week to actively experience and create
musically diverse songs, chants, improvisational and guided movement
activities, and instrumental jam sessions. As the parent-child relationship
is a vital component of the program, both adult and children are
invited but never pressured to participate. Children often learn
by observing others, especially older children, as well as their
parents. Classes are led by outstanding registered Music Together teachers who bring
both a musical background and knowledge of child development to
their classes, providing parent education. Most of all, Music Together
is about having fun, learning through play, about discovering the
"joy of family music®"!
